Grow in Intimacy with God: It’s Time to Know Him on a First Name Basis

Most people, whether they admit it or not, characterize God in one of two ways. He loves me when I do right and He punishes me when I do wrong. Period.

Unfortunately, that small-minded view of our Father leads to a “works” philosophy that keeps you on a performance treadmill and stifles any real hopes of coming into an authentic relationship with God.

But this week God is saying Enough is Enough! He wants us to grow in intimacy with Him by knowing Him by name.

About a year ago I read Praying the Names of God by Ann Spangler. It’s a 26-week devotional. Fantastic read; I highly recommend it. In the book she wrote:

“In the ancient world names not only distinguish one person from another, names were often though to reveal the essential nature and character of a person. To know God’s name is to enjoy  a kind of privileged access to Him.”

To know God by name demolishes our old definitions of Him and puts us in right relationship with Him. Fortunately, He has consistently revealed Himself by name in scripture. This week on the Morning Prayer calls we will study (4) of those names:

1. ELOHIM – God, Mighty Creator
2. EL ROI – The God Who Sees Me
3. YAHWEH YIREH – The Lord Will Provide
4. ADONAY –  Lord, Master

Today we discussed Elohim, the creator God in Genesis 1:1. In the Hebrew text the word Elohim appears 32 times in Chapter 1 of Genesis alone and a subsequent 2500 times in the entire Old Testament.

What is God trying to say? If He said it once, He said it 2500 times: I AM THE CREATOR. I make something out of nothing. I am the God of the Impossible. I create where there is nothing!

The Hebrew word for create is Bara. It’s a verb and refers exclusively to divine activity, not man-made. Bara speaks of something great, new…In Gen 1:1,  God created (bara) the heavens and the earth. He created them from nothing. Gen 1:21, God created the fish and the birds. Again, created from nothing. Gen 1:27, God created man from the dust. And He made the dust from NOTHING.

Are you in the midst of a dead situation? Are you in need of God to create (bara) something from nothing. Then keep the faith; don’t let hope die.  Let Elohim do the impossible. We’re on Day 29 and God is not through blessing you. Be encouraged!

Stay tuned this week as we continue this discussion on the Morning Prayer calls.

I would love to hear from you! Let me know how this topic is speaking to your heart.

With God all things are possible,
Dr. Celeste
