Tips for Holiday Safety and Theft Prevention

Hey Guys! “It’s beginning to look a lot like the holidays, everywhere you go.”

And depending on where you live, you may have noticed a shift in the temperature. It’s like one moment fall is in bloom—the leaves are looking lovely in such a beautiful array of colors—and then BAM! Winter has crept up on fall’s heels. The leaves have fallen off the trees and in some areas old man winter has already shown his face.

I live in Buffalo…enough said!

Then to further complicate things we are in the season of Holiday Shopping.

On the one hand, the excitement and great feeling you get on the inside as Christmas carols are played on the sound systems throughout the stores is wonderful.

But on the other hand because we feel good and people seem to be a lot nicer,  we can become vulnerable to holiday crime and theft.

Therefore, I’m offering some safety tips that will not only keep you vigilant, but also insure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience this holiday season.

Holiday Safety Tips from the LAPD (except the first one lol):

  • Before leaving your house, remember to pray and ask God for direction on when, where and how to go.

  • Avoid driving alone at night.
  • Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in and out of the car. Remember to set your alarm.
  • If shopping at night, park in a well-lit area.
  • Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows.
  • Park as close as you can to the store and remember where you’ve parked.
  • Do not leave packages in plain view because this may create a temptation for thieves.
  • Be sure to locate your keys before going out to your vehicle.
  • Do not lay down your packages or purse to open the door.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. If something or someone looks suspicious, ask the mall or store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location.

  • If you need to use the ATM, pick one that is located inside of a mall or a well-lit location.
  • Withdraw only the amount of cash you need.
  • When typing in your PIN, shield the keypad from anyone who may be nearby.
  • Do not throw away your ATM receipt near the location.

  • If possible, shop during the daytime. If you need to shop at night, go with a friend or relative.
  • Avoid wearing expensive items.
  • If possible, avoid carrying a purse or wallet. (it makes you a prime target to thieves in crowded areas.)
  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
  • If you are able, pay for your items with a debit/credit card.
  • Keep cash in your front pocket.
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have a clear view and accessible movement in case of mishaps.
  • Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason.

  • If possible, leave small children at home with a trusted babysitter.
  • Teach your children to go to a store clerk if separated from you.
  • Teach your children to stay near you at all times.
  • Never allow your child to go to the restroom or car alone.
  • Teach your child his/her full name, address and telephone number to give to the police officer or mall security.
  • Teach your child to immediately inform you if a stranger is bothering them.

At Home:

  • Double check to make sure that you’ve locked the doors and windows before leaving your home. even if it is only for a few minutes.
  • Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer.
  • Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sound occupied.
  • Do not keep your holiday gifts visible to the outside world.

Strangers at Your Door:

  • Be aware that criminals sometimes pose a couriers delivering gifts.
  • Be aware that some criminals like to take advantage of people during the holiday seasons by asking for donations.
  • Ask for their identification, and find out how the donated funds will be used. If you are not satisfied, do no donate.

Hope these tips will be of some use this holiday season. Have fun, enjoy and be safe!
