Quick Tip Monday!!!

Summer is in the air and you know what that means…parties, games, swimming at the beach, amusement parks and barbeques that last late into the night.

While we’re dreaming of filling ourselves with savory goodness and sweet delicacies, lets not forget our digestive systems and all the work it will need to do to rid itself of such wonderful blissful waste.

Here are some tips for improving and maintaining your digestive health:

  • Eat a high-fiber diet – include foods such as vegetables, legumes, and fruits.
  • Get insoluble and soluble fiber – it’s imperative that you get both fibers. Insoluble fibers or roughage (wheat bran, vegetables and whole grains) are unable to be digested by the body and therefore adds bulk to the stools. Soluble fibers (oat bran, nuts, seeds, and legumes) pulls in water which helps the stools not to be too watery.
  • Limit foods that are high in fat – Rule of thumb, fatty foods equals a slower digestive process. Pairing fatty foods with high fiber foods will ensure less stress on the digestive system.
  • Choose lean meats – Fatty cuts of meat leads to uneasy digestion. Select lean meats such as skinless poultry.
  • Incorporate probiotics into your diet – Probiotics is the good bacteria present in the digestive track. They help with fighting the effects of a poor diet, antibiotics and stress. Examples of a good source of probiotics are yogurt, sauerkraut, kombucha, pickles and tempeh.
  • Eat on schedule – Eating breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks around the same time each day, helps to keep the digestive system in peak conditions.
  • Stay hydrated – Drinking plenty of water helps the digestive system rid itself of fats more easily.
  • Exercise regularly – Getting active helps to keep the digestive system moving; and maintaining a healthy weight helps with the overall health of the digestive track.
