My Love for Cleansing Condtioners

Quick Tip Monday!!!

I wrote this blog a couple of month’s back, but now that fall is here, I thought this would be a good way to kick off maintaining your tresses during the drier seasons.

Due to the fact that natural hair tends to be curly, it makes it harder for the oil that is naturally produced to reach from root to tip,

And because of that I prefer to use cleansing conditioners  over the traditional sulfate shampoo.

Sulfates are known to be harsh detergents that robs the hair of it’s natural moisture which makes it harder for you to quench those already dry tresses.

But cleansing conditioners  are wonderful because they allow you to clean your hair without stripping it of all it’s natural oils.

Yes, cleansing conditioners lack the foaming agents that can make us believe our hair is not yet clean unless we see the foam;

but cleansing conditioners have proven to get the job done just as good as there foaming nemesis.

Plus thanks to all the products that cater to natural hair nowadays, you can purchase a sulfate-free shampoo and get the foam without the dryness.

When I need that extra clean kick, Once a month I opt for either an ACV rinse, or the Lemonade rinse created by Lorraine Massey (Curly Girl Handbook).

When doing the ACV rinse, I put a 1/4 cup of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar in a spray bottle and fill the rest up with water. I use it just like I would shampoo. I cleanse my hair with it and allow it to sit in my hair for twenty minutes then rinse.

When doing the Lemonade rinse, I mix the juice from two organic lemons with my favorite conditioner, and proceed to treat it the same way I would if doing the ACV rinse.

At the end of the day, it’s all about preference; but I do believe that taking this route with my natural hair journey has helped me with hair retention, shine and easy manageability.

How do you prefer to maintain your gorgeous tresses? Please comment below and let us all know.

Update: Shea Moisture has a line called Peace Rose Oil Complex that has a Shampoo 764302216131 (Peace Rose Oil Complex Nourish & Silken Shampoo)
that lathers without the sulfate for those of you who just need that foaming action.

  1. Steph, I LOVED this!!!! SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Co-Wash Conditioning Cleanser is my #1 go to product. I also do the “Lemonade” rinse once a month, as suggested by SheaMoisture with their Coconut & Hibiscus Conditioning Cleanser; because when I moved back to NY the water was so much harder here and it was really affecting my curls and the products I use in my hair. It has made ALL the difference for me.

    • Hey Brandi,

I’ve been thinking about trying the coconut and hibiscus CoWash. Maybe that’ll be the next product I’ll pick up. I so love the Lemonade rinse; and my husband definitely prefer it to the ACV rinse, because of the smell. 😊 Thank you much for the recommendation!

      • You should try it. The lemonade rinse with it smells like lemon/vanilla icing lol. Everyone in my house uses it (except for my husband because he’s bald 😂). But for all our curls it has been the BEST. We used to use the “As I Am” products before leaving MD but after awhile it was like our hair was just soaking up the products without much result. But the Coconut & Hibiscus CoWash followed up by SheaMoisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-In Conditioner and Curls’ Creme Brule Whipped Curl Cream has been the winning combo for us. If you do use it, let me know how it works for you ☺️

      • I’ll definitely let you know. The lemon/vanilla icing sounds delightful. My husband’s bald as well and he still tries to use my products. 😊
OMG!!! SheaMoisture JBCO leave-in is one of my absolute favorites. It’s definitely a staple for me. I could talk natural hair all day long. 😍
